Greg Chandler

We chatted to Mathoura-based signwriter and mural artist Greg Chandler. Greg grew up in Echuca and moved to Mathoura in 2012 after several years living overseas. He is a professionally trained signwriter and has turned his skills to mural painting in recent years.

Greg came within a whisker of the major prize at the South Australian mural-painters' competition, held from May 2-7 2017 in Jamestown, north of Adelaide.

How do you describe your art style and the mediums in which you work?

Artistic  Signs, Large scale  hand painted murals,  Portraits in oils and acrylics

How long have you been creating?

I became an apprentice signwriter in 1998 at a time when most things were painted, either by brush or airbrush. I started focusing  on murals with a trip to the Eugowra Mural Festival in 2012 and have been taking portrait and life drawing classes since early 2017.

What Is your favourite thing about creating?

I like to see the end result and the way people respond to images that show the involvement of a human painter, as opposed to a digital printer.

What benefit do you get from your art?

My favourite thing is working with other painters on collaborative projects. Travel and meeting people from different places  and the chance to earn a living  are other benefits.

What are your plans for your art in the future?

I plan to continue to improve my drawing skills,  particularly related to portraits and the human figure, to the point where I can enter some of the larger competitions and have a decent chance of being selected as a finalist . With murals I plan to participate in as many festivals  as possible and apply  for any public art projects that I can. And as always I'm ready to take on artistic signmaking projects for clients who appreciate the value a unique sign adds  to their business identity.
