Threads of our Communities

2016 - 2017

Throughout 2016 and 2017, South West Arts are celebrating fibre art in our local area. The celebration, titled Threads of our Communities, encompasses a range of activities including fibre art exhibitions, knitting kits for schools, workshops and public artworks.

Threads of our Communities is inspired by the region’s strong ties to the agricultural production of wool and cotton and the fibre arts and crafts that emerged with the growth of these industries in the region. It is a regional collaboration between South West Arts and West Darling Arts, local councils and numerous community groups and organisations.

What is fibre art?

Fibre Art is art that is created using natural or synthetic fibres or techniques that are traditionally thought of as relating to fibre, such as sewing, knitting or weaving.

Official Launch

Threads of our Communities was launch by the project lead council, Hay Shire, on Tuesday 28 June at the Hay Memorial Hall.

Stitch-Stop Tour

As part of Threads of our Communities, South West Arts took a giant knitting spool on a Stitch-Stop tour of towns in the region to encourage the community to celebrate and create fibre art.

The tour visited schools, halls and town centres with giant knitting and fibre art workshops.

Fibre Art Prize

South West Arts invited artists and crafters of all ages to enter the Threads of our Communities Fibre Art Prize with a fibre artwork inspired by the communities, people, land and cultures in which we live.

The Overall Fibre Art Prize was won by Anne Henderics, with her hand-made felted wearable art piece titled 'Racey'.
