Garage Girls
The story of Alice Anderson and Australia’s first all-girl garage!
A rollicking ride through 1920s Melbourne.
Fresh from sell-out seasons in Melbourne - buckle up for Garage Girls, touring regional Australia in 2026!
A theatrical hit created by two of Melbourne’s most exciting female-led theatre companies, The Shift Theatre and Three Birds Theatre bring 1920s Melbourne to life in this original gothic drama celebrating Alice Anderson - the trail-blazing, pioneering, go-getting founder of Australia’s first all-girl garage.
Society reels from the aftermath of World War I and a second wave of Spanish flu wreaks havoc on the streets. Women’s fashion sets startling trends and the city hums with the music of the motor car. One small woman defies convention and makes her mark.
Inspired by historical truths, Garage Girls chronicles Alice Anderson’s short but eventful life and the extraordinary paths she forged for women. Entrepreneur, mechanic and Australian pioneer, this magical story telling event celebrates the grit and gumption of this remarkable woman in a world on the precipice of change.
Written by Candace Miles, Madelaine Nunn and Anna Rodway (Three Birds Theatre), alongside Carolyn Bock and Helen Hopkins (The Shift Theatre), and dynamic sound design by Rachel Stone, Garage Girls is a slick, fast paced, theatrical journey through Australia’s past, tracing the spirited women who shaped its future.
