TINY STORIES

THE SECRET LIFE OF BIRDS

Visual notes and Sketches - exploring the Island Sanctuary

I come, most recently, from saltwater and the tidal mudflats of Dangar Island. Daughter of Another River, I now make my home in the dusty interior where the water runs fresh and without pattern. I have become accustomed to a different ebb and flow, as I undertake this metamorphosis from the inside out.

These new works (in hallway gallery at South West Arts) reflect the current space I am working from and I hope you can recognise the forest and the many birds from the Island Sanctuary and surroundings. As I was pulling these pieces together, I was stuck by the multitude of wading birds, grounded but free to fly. Every day I walk the Island Sanctuary, watching the many species of birds come and go, sometimes nesting for a while then moving on. I have particularly enjoyed watching the Ibises and Spoonbills as hey wade along the river, foraging like grazing cattle and fishing for tasty morsels as they follow the food and each other.

These images tell a story from my soul in imagery and abstract metaphor. In time, I hope, I will find a way to put words to the feelings and tease out a little bit more of the journey I am taking. I have found myself a long way from home but truly it is in movement I can start to find myself a long way from home but truly it is in movement I can start to find myself and maybe even where I belong.
